Police respond to 'security alert' at train station with line to Manchester affected

Some trains to Manchester may be cancelled this morning due a 'security alert' at a station in Hampshire.

Basingstoke train station is currently closed off. Pictures posted on social media show police on the scene with a cordon in place around the station.

National Rail said the station is shut due to a 'security alert'. All lines through the station are currently closed, with trains 'cancelled or revised'.

A route affected by the closure is the CrossCountry route between Manchester Piccadilly and Bournemouth. The route between Manchester Piccadilly and Nottingham/Southampton Central is also affected.

National Rail said: "A security alert at #Basingstoke means that all lines through the station are currently closed. As a result, trains may be cancelled or revised."

CrossCountry said: "NEW: Due to the police dealing with an incident at Basingstoke, all lines are blocked between Reading and Southampton Airport Parkway. Services may be cancelled, delayed or diverted via Guildford."

The operator added in a further post on X: "UPDATE: Customers can use GWR services to travel via any reasonable route for onward CrossCountry connections."
