The 'weird' penalty to Rangers double jeopardy has Lee McCulloch cracking up as SFA probe falls flat

Baffled Lee McCulloch could only laugh as he questioned if the SFA had explained the decision to not allow Rangers to retake their penalty against Hibs.

Defender Nectarios Triantis was punished following a VAR check after a a collision with John Souttar saw referee David Dickinson sent to the monitor by Andrew Dallas and the team in Clydesdale House. James Tavernier would see his spot-kick saved by David Marshall before Scott Wright beat the Hibs ' goalkeeper with the rebound.

But following another VAR review, it was judged that Wright had a foot in the box when the skipper struck the ball and the goal was ruled out. It was judged by the on-field team that only Wright had his foot in the box - leading to a free-kick being awarded to Nick Montgomery's side. Had the off-field officials decided that another of the visiting players had their foot in the box Tavernier would have been allowed a retake.

Speaking to PLZ about the penalty flashpoint, former Gers' star McCulloch reckons that his former side should have been allowed a retake - despite questioning the original penalty call. He said: “It was a weird scenario for me.

"The penalty, I’m not sure it was a definite penalty, and then he’s missed the penalty, James Tavernier, and then the encroachment from Scott Wright. But I think there was encroachment from Hibs as well.

"So it would suggest a retake? But I don’t know, has anybody come out and said anything to explain that?” Host Peter Martin responded: “Do you expect that to happen? I don’t know what you’re hoping for there.”

McCulloch laughed before responding: “It’s a very, very strange one. and you can see why clubs and managers are getting more and more annoyed.”
