Following the suspension by the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) on Sunday, wrestler Bajrang Punia opened up on the issue saying that never refused to give his samples to the NADA officials for the doping test.
Wrestling's world governing body UWW has suspended Bajrang Punia till the end of this year following NADA's decision to hand him a provisional suspension for refusing to undergo a dope test. However, in a rather surprising decision, the Sports Authority of India (SAI) sanctioned close to Rs nine lakh for his training abroad despite being well aware of NADA's order. Bajrang, one of the country's most successful wrestlers, was suspended by NADA on April 23 after being served a whereabouts failure notice on April 18.

India is fielding a 14-man squad for the World Wrestling Olympic Qualifiers scheduled in Istanbul from Thursday, the last chance for wrestlers to obtain their quotas for the Paris 2024 Olympics. The 14 wrestlers include Aman Sehrawat and Deepak Punia, as per Olympics.com. The event will conclude on May 12. The two finalists in each weight divisions will earn the Olympic quotas for their respective nations, with three quotas on offer in each weight class. The third quota will go to the winner of the playoff match between two bronze medalists of a particular weight class.

Following reports of his provisional suspension order, Olympic bronze medal winner Bajrang Punia on Sunday clarified that he never refused to give his sample. "I want to clarify about a report about my dope test. I never refused to give my sample, I requested them for a response about the expired kit which they had sent to collect my sample. I wanted to know what action was taken? I told them to please give me a reply and take my sample. My lawyer Vidhusphat Singhania will reply to this notice soon," Bajrang wrote on X.

According to sources, Punia failed to provide his urine sample for the selection trials at Sonepat on March 10, prompting NADA to issue the order suspending him from participation in any future events. "With subject to paragraph 4:1:2 below and in accordance with article 7.4 of the NADR 2021, Bajrang Punia has been immediately provisionally suspended from participation in any competition or activity prior to the final decision reached at a hearing in this matter," read an official release from NADA dated April 23.
