Clarendon Leisure Centre fire LIVE as firefighters tackle huge blaze in Salford - updates

Firefighters are tackling a huge blaze in Salford. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) is at the scene of the blaze at Clarendon Leisure Centre, on Liverpool Street.

The road is shut both ways this morning (May 10). Images from the fire show huge plumes of smoke and flames from the early hours.

In a statement, GMFRS say they were called out just before 3am.

“At around 2.45am today (Friday, May 10) eight fire engines from across Greater Manchester plus the command support unit from Hyde fire station, the prime mover from Bolton fire station, and the technical response from Leigh were called to a fire involving a leisure centre off Liverpool Street, Salford," a spokesman said.

“Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus worked quickly to get the blaze under control using hose reels and jets. Crews remain in attendance alongside partners from Greater Manchester Police and Salford City Council with road closures in place.”

In a further tweet, GMFRS posted: "Firefighters are currently tackling a fire involving a leisure centre off Liverpool Street in Salford. Residents nearby should keep windows and doors closed and people are asked to avoid the area while crews deal with the incident."

Travel service Inrix has posted: "Liverpool Street in both directions closed due to building fire at Clarendon Leisure Centre from Fitzwarren Street to A5063 Albion Way."
