Dundalk goalkeeper George Shelvey given 10-match suspension

Dundalk goalkeeper George Shelvey has received a 10-match ban following a red card after their defeat to Drogheda United on Monday

Shelvey was dismissed after the full-time whistle after becoming involved in an incident with officials in Weavers Park.

An Independent Disciplinary Committee of the FAI has sanctioned the former Nottingham Forest goalkeeper "for a breach of regulations on racism/discrimination" in "abuse towards a match official".

The ban is one of the longest in League of Ireland history.

A statement issued by the FAI this afternoon read: "The FAI and League of Ireland maintain a strict zero tolerance approach towards such offences and are committed to ensuring that League of Ireland matches remain a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.

"In accordance with FIFA regulations and the FAI disciplinary regulations, George Shelvey will serve a ten-match suspension.

"Please note the decision of the Independent Disciplinary Committee may be appealed."

Shelvey will not be able to play until Dundalk's fixture away to Bohemians on 26 July as the fixture list stands.

Dundalk have been contacted for comment.
