'I am bewildered' - Ian Wright makes 'ridiculous' comment after Man City decision

Arsenal legend Ian Wright has admitted he was bewildered to see Manchester City awarded their first penalty against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday evening.

The Blues comfortably beat their West Midlands opponents 5-1 but the rout began in controversial fashion. City were awarded a penalty when Rayan Ait-Nouri collided with Josko Gvardiol inside the area.

Referee Craig Pawson awarded the penalty on the pitch but it was checked by the VAR, Stuart Attwell. After a slight delay, Stockley Park approved of the decision and Erling Haaland bagged his first of four on the day.

While it was agreed that City deserved the victory, Match of the Day pundit Wright was staggered that the Blues were given the early penalty. He explained: "Absolutely (Gary O’Neil) has a point.

"This could be one of the worst penalties I have ever seen given in the game. It is getting more and more ridiculous.

"You have got Ait-Nouri turning, he isn’t looking, he has actually contacted the ball and I don’t think he is actually even kicked him here at all. He is getting ready to follow through and he’s [Gvardiol] blasted into him.

"How can they look at that and say he is impeding him? I am bewildered."

Victory for City, thanks to Haaland's four goals and a Julian Alvarez strike means they are once again a point behind Arsenal at the top of the Premier League with a game in hand. The Gunners won earlier in the day 3-0 against AFC Bournemouth at the Emirates Stadium.
