Manchester United's Andre Onana transfer decision makes sense - there's just one problem with it

In the space of less than 12 months, Andre Onana has gone from being a Champions League runner-up to a goalkeeper who could be playing in the Europa League for the first time in four years next season.

Following last Saturday's 1-1 draw with Burnley, Manchester United's Champions League qualification hopes for next season are officially over. The best they can now hope for is a place in the Europa League.

It signifies a huge backward step and United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is ready to respond by being ruthless. As reported by the Manchester Evening News, United are open to offers for all but four of their first-team players ahead of this forthcoming summer's transfer window.

Onana is among the quartet who have been deemed untouchable by United, along with youngsters Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund. It means United could consider an offer for Marcus Rashford if a lucrative one comes along, but they would prefer to keep him and try and get his career back on track after a difficult season.

But while there is no argument to be had about United putting a barrier between Mainoo, Garnacho and Hojlund and possible suitors, their decision to put a hands-off notice on Onana is somewhat surprising, certainly when they have not categorised Bruno Fernandes in the same group. The latter has been excellent in recent weeks and remains a station above the bulk of his teammates.
