Martin Bakole and Tyson Fury would be ‘super-tight fight' as Congolese contender eyes up world title eliminator
Boxing trainer Billy Nelson fully believes that his man Martin Bakole is destined to become a world champion - and that he will beat every other heavyweight on the planet bar Tyson Fury.
The 30-year-old, who commands a record of 21-1, is set to box American contender Cassius Chaney in the next couple of months in a final eliminator for the WBA world title, which is currently held by Oleksandr Usyk. Two-weight unified champion Usyk will do battle with Fury for all four of the major heavyweight belts in Saudi Arabia on February 17, and Scottish trainer Nelson is hopeful that his man will be in line for a crack at world glory if he can come through against Cheney, who has 23 wins and one loss from his 24 bouts.
Speaking on the Seconds Out Youtube channel, he said: "This opportunity has been long overdue in my eyes. But now that we have it, we have got until February 13 to negotiate with Chaney's people and get the fight made. If we can't get it made then it will go to purse bids, but we will take care of that if and when it happens.
"We are now at the races with Martin and are near the front. He now has a clear path to a world title fight. If he beats Chaney, I think the WBA will call for the mandatory challenger to get the world title shot in October or November. We will fight whoever that may be at the time. I think there is an outside chance."
Nelson reckons Bakole, who was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, would likely fall short against the "Gypsy King" Tyson Fury, but is in no doubt that the Glasgow-based contender will beat all of the other highly ranked heavyweights should they agree to face Bakole.
