Matildas captain Sam Kerr fires Chelsea one step closer to Women's Super League title

Chelsea striker and Matildas skipper Sam Kerr has scored in back-to-back wins over Tottenham Hotspur to keep Chelsea on track to retain the Women's Super League title.

The Blues' two crucial victories against Spurs take them four points clear of second-placed Arsenal, who have a game in hand, with just two rounds remaining.

Kerr's blistering form has been key in Chelsea's surge up the ladder, allowing them to overtake Arsenal after a series of postponed matches earlier in the season.

The striker has now netted 18 goals in 20 league games, three shy of her Golden Boot-winning season last year, and six goals better than second-placed Arsenal striker Vivianne Miedema.

Her consistency is all-the-more impressive given the absence of creative midfielder and strike partner Fran Kirby, who provided many of Kerr's assists in their previous campaign.

Her most recent exploits came against Chelsea's North London rivals Spurs, home to Matildas teammate Kyah Simon, seeing Kerr scoring twice in both victories.

The first goal came on Sunday in a thrilling 3-1 victory, where the Blues came from an own goal down and an early red card to goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger to seal a tough win.

Kerr headed home in the 71st minute to put Chelsea ahead after Guro Reiten sensationally equalised just before the half-hour, while Canadian Olympian Jessie Fleming struck in stoppage time to give Chelsea all three points.

Meanwhile, Kerr's second goal over Spurs came in their rescheduled match on Friday morning.

After Bethany England's opener was cancelled out by an improbable Kerys Harrop equaliser, which was assisted by Simon, Kerr popped up minutes later to head home what turned out to be the winner.
