Rory McIlroy net worth and Manchester United interest amid Masters chance

Manchester United fan Rory McIlroy will be going for the elusive golfing major that has evaded his grasp so far when he tees off at The Masters on Thursday.

The Northern Irishman painstakingly finished as runner-up in 2022 but will go for the crown at Augusta National to complete the career set of major wins. It’s been a busy year for McIlroy both on and off the course.

The 34-year-old has tallied three tour wins and was part of the Team Europe outfit that outclassed Team USA at the Ryder Cup in October. Away from the fairways, McIlroy in October admitted his openness in becoming a minority stake owner of Manchester United, five months after being named as the richest UK sportsperson under the age of 35.

This is yet to come to fruition with Sir Jim Ratcliffe completing his 25% stake investment earlier this year, but McIlroy has nevertheless planted a seed. In November, McIlroy announced he was stepping down from the PGA Tour board.

He admitted he had lost the enjoyment of trying to shape the future of the sport amid the looming presence of LIV Golf - the Saudi-backed franchise that has lured the likes of Masters favourite and defending champion Jon Rahm.

McIlroy has softened his adverse stance to the conglomerate but has nevertheless been the most outspoken against the money-bustling tour. Last June, the PGA announced it was in talks for a merger with LIV, although many are sceptical about the chances of this coming to pass. However, McIlroy's focus this week will be on clasping hands on that Green Jacket.
