Who is Jon Moss? Steven Gerrard cheered his EPL exit as referee branded a 'disgrace' in mix for SFA gig

The SFA have Jon Moss on their list to become the man to lead referees in Scottish football.

The veteran English Premier League referee is in the mix to replace Crawford Allan as the current head of refs as he gets set to exit this summer. Allan's reign has been blighted by seething anger over the controversial introduction of VAR to Scottish football. And those ardent critics of video technology have been emboldened by the latest admission from decision makers.

There have been 26 VAR gaffes in the Scottish Premiership this season and the palpable tension surrounding the tech appears ready to reach boiling point. But can Moss – regarded by his peers as one of the finest English referees of his generation – prove a galvanising figure in the wake of Allan heading for the exit? The man who loves rock music is aiming to strike a harmonious chord if he lands the gig. Record Sport looks at his rep down south and it's a timely reminder of the furore caused by officials.

Steven Gerrard likely won't be sending Jon Moss a congratulations card if he lands the top job with the SFA. The former Rangers boss famously didn't hold back as he said good riddance to the official after finding out he was retiring at the end of the 2021/22 season. Gerrard fumed over Moss' display in the 2-1 defeat to Liverpool in May 2022.

When asked on Moss, he said: “No comment, I just hope that it’s looked at. That’s all I say. I hope it’s looked at. Have I gone to talk to Jon Moss? No. I just hope his performance is looked at. I don’t want to be sour, Liverpool scored two goals against us and we need to look at that and I don’t want to cover over any cracks.

And he was cutting when he heard about Moss' imminent retirement. He added: "Is he? Good."
