Who is Matt Hargreaves? Meet the former Adidas chief leading Man United's summer recruitment plan

Matt Hargreaves will oversee Manchester United's recruitment plans ahead of this forthcoming summer's transfer window following the exit of John Murtough.

On Tuesday, United confirmed that Murtough will leave his position as football director after more than 10 years at Old Trafford. He is understood to have submitted his resignation last week.

Murtough's departure will allow Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Ineos Group to continue overseeing the development of a new football leadership structure. Ratcliffe has already added Omar Berrada to the club's ranks and is keen to get both Dan Ashworth and Jason Wilcox through the door as quickly as possible.

However, it is understood that Ashworth, who is currently on gardening leave from Newcastle United, will not be appointed in time to have an input on United's recruitment ahead of this summer's window, leaving Hargreaves to oversee proceedings. Despite this, there remains uncertainty about his long-term future in M16.

In essence, Hargreaves, at least temporarily, is filling the void Murtough has vacated until United can secure Ashworth's services. Working closely with the Ineos team, Berrada and most probably Wilcox, Ashworth will likely have a big say in the direction of United's recruitment.

Though Hargreaves has never been a recruitment chief, he has contributed to getting deals over the line at Old Trafford since joining the club in June last year, being handed the title of director of player negotiations. He joined the club without a background in football, previously working for sportswear giant Adidas.
