Wishaw Wycombe Wanderers celebrate trophy win in 30th anniversary year

Celebrations went long into the weekend after Wishaw Wycombe Wanderers lifted their first trophy in six years, in their 30th anniversary year.

Led by boss Kevin McGhee, the Caledonian League Premier Division side beat First Division Rothesay Brandanes 5-0 to win the Douglas Smith League Cup final at Broadwood on April 19.

A Jamie Moir hat-trick and strikes from Sean Lindsay and Davie Rae saw off the challenge from Brandanes, with Wanderers heading back to sponsors Clydesdale Bar in Wishaw for some well-earned celebrations.

Club president Alex Richardson said: “We were favourites, because Rothesay are a First Division side.

“By the luck of the draw, we ended up getting the big guns and putting them out, but Rothesay did beat two Premier Division teams to get to the final, so you’ve got to give them credit.

“We haven’t won a trophy in about six years, and we were a very successful team, so to not win anything in that time, you can imagine how the celebrations went!

“It’s a massive win. It’s the club’s 30th anniversary, and my 25th year with Wishaw Wycombe, while there are still a core of boys here who were born in 1994.

“Jamie Moir, who scored a hat-trick, was one of those boys who have been with us for years, certainly in excess of 15, and the last time he played at Broadwood was about 10 years ago when we won the Regional Cup, and he scored the winner.

“This is a phenomenal win for the whole club, and I’m delighted for big Kevin for all the hard work he puts in.”
