Woman dies after being struck by car on M6

A woman has died after being struck by a car on the M6 motorway.

The woman, aged 52, tragically died on the scene on the northbound side of the motorway near to the M62 slip road. Officers first came across a 'collision involving a white car' between junction 21 and junction 21A at around 12.15am today (April 9).

Police said the woman had been 'struck by a vehicle'. Emergency services raced to the scene but she was tragically pronounced dead at 1.14am.

A 52-year-old man, from Preston, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. He has been taken into custody.

After the incident, a full stretch of the northbound carriageway was closed off for several hours. A diversion route was put in place as accident investigation was carried out.

Officers fully reopened the road at around 9.30am this morning. In a statement, a Cheshire Police spokesperson said: "At 12.15am today (Tuesday 9 April), officers came across a collision involving a white car on the M6 motorway between Junction 21 and Junction 21a.

"Shortly after officers discovered that a 52-year-old woman from Stoke-on-Trent had been struck by a vehicle on the M6 to the M62 slip road. Attempts to save the woman were conducted, but despite officers’ best their efforts, she was unfortunately pronounced dead at the scene at 1.14am.

"A 52-year-old man from Preston has since been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving."
