Connor Goldson told wife 'I just want to die' after heart surgery as Rangers star opens up on emotional battle

Connor Goldson has opened up on the emotional battle he faced after his heart surgery and admits he told his wife 'I just want to die'.

Back in 2017, the Rangers defender required a life-changing operation while on the books at English Premier League outfit Brighton. One year later he moved to Ibrox under Steven Gerrard and has been a rock in the backline for the men from Govan ever since. Bosses have walked in and out of the door but he's been a mainstay and he's now reflected on THAT day in his life that could have changed everything.

Speaking on TalkingTransitions podcast, Goldson delivered a graphic insight into the procedure he endured, revealing the Brighton club doctor had taken some pictures that he has on his phone of his heart after doctors literally sawed through his chest. In his recovery, the defender remembers messaging his partner Kayleigh to say he wasn't sure he could cope with the pain as the initial drugs wore off.

He said: "I was bad. They had to break my chest bone, literally with a saw. The Brighton doctor actually came into the operation, so he managed to take pictures on my phone. I've got pictures of my heart and stuff like that.

"They sawed straight through my chest, from here to here. Opened it up, done the operation. The first night I was full of drugs, I was out of it. Then the second night it hit me. I was in the hospital bed and I remember texting Kayleigh saying 'I just want to die, I can't go through this pain'."

Ever since his move to Rangers, Goldson has been irreplaceable in the backline. During his time at the club he has played well over 300 games and has won the Scottish Premiership, Scottish Cup and League Cup all on one occasion.

He will be key for Philippe Clement and his title
